What’s good: The approach is not that the story focuses on the main match creating a climax, but it is the journey that you should really watch.

What’s worse: The obviously clichéd sports biopic pieces together what makes the film resemble things we’ve already seen and blurs the sound. Furthermore, no one clearly ages in this universe.

Lou Break: It’s a long movie, it has a predictable part that plays out and you’ll get the hint.

See or not?: There is nothing that would create a strong impression on avoiding it. You should give it a chance to make at least the first half very enjoyable.

Language: Hindi

With ‘Cinematic Liberties’, it is a visual account of the life of the proud former Indian women’s cricket team captain Mithali Raj, who broke into the system and made the world turn its attention to women in sports.

Shabaash Mithu Movie Review: Script Analysis

The boom in content revolving around sports, and especially biopics, has almost trained our brains to automatically predict the story and skip it if it doesn’t serve a compelling introduction. Because 9 times out of 10 the blueprint looks the same and it produces zero to no effect. So when there is another sports biopic of an actor who has given another film in the same year, the above situation is highly unavoidable.

Game changer Sreejit Mukherjee enters with writer Priya Aven to shape the fictional biopic of Mithali Raj, whose triumphs in the real world are still fresh in our minds. Together they manage to win the intro war as they chose the basic path of going linearly to tell the story. We meet a beautiful 8 year old girl who is learning Bharatnatyam. The opening is so interesting because it’s not about a girl who was determined since she was born, but she was inspired by someone who was determined.

The whole part and which is a big part of the film when Mithali was a little girl who was introduced to the game and later got attached to it, is interesting and entertaining. The idea of focusing on this girl’s journey more than her achievements is also the cherry on the cake.

Where cherries start to taste bitter is when they take it easy. And crowdfunding is to be blamed for this, even if the runtime is quite long. Just like a dispute does not last for a time that we are immersed in it so that the conclusion can shake us. There are women here who are denied even basic rights by the Indian cricket board, even worse they are insulted when they ask for it. There comes a time when they do not have proper toilets, so they have to take help of roadside buses. Tough moments like these but never enough to make you question why did we see them based on their gender? The idea was to realize how disparate our systems are, but the sound fluctuates.

On top of that, there are clichéd soldiers that seem like the team thought couldn’t be avoided, so they exist. Like 70 minutes of Chak De’s speech! Or there is always a girl who is jealous and creates the most negative drama to be the biggest support in the end. The change of hearts happens instantly and it all boils down to almost nothing.

Besides, why don’t people age in this world? If you think when Taapsee Pannu was shown as a teenager she was 15 years old, please tell me how?

Shabaash Mithu Movie Review: Star Performance

Taapsee Pannu has the art of changing her body language effortlessly and clearly. Watching them since Manmarziyaan, the actors use their physicality to play their characters and somehow make them all look different. Entering after a good 35 minutes, she managed to create an impact in the first half. It is in the second part where the continuity breaks down and she looks and behaves like Taapsee Pannu and not Mithali Raj from the first half.

Also, Taapsee please take a long break before the next sports film. In the middle do another slap or manmarziyaan. I adore your craft and would love to enjoy it in the versatile nature.

Vijay Raaz gets to play a role that he can walk to sleep and rightly so! Special mention to those two little girls who are so sweet and wonderful in their work.

Shabaash Mithu Movie Review: Direction, Music

Shreejit Mukherjee is caught between making a serious sports biopic like Jhund, and a biopic that moves people emotionally. He makes a construction that is not entirely either of the two but is completely confused. As a director he decided to open his film with a scene that we are going to see in the second part, was that another teaser before the film? He plugs in a few scenes with a shayari in the background, or just a spoof-like character to make them look like 30 seconds of melodramatic commercials.

There’s a lot of music here. While the songs are average enough to keep you hooked when it starts, they’re pretty much the same until the end.

Shabaash Mithu Movie Review: The Last Word

Taapsee Pannu as Mithali Raj finally signs the wooden bat with a ball point cello gripper pen. No one in the entire production and post-production team found it absurd. The film could have been great things but it was average.
